What is the Best Weight Loss Exercise?

Let me tell you...

Do you ever wonder what the best weight loss exercise is?

Should you go high intensity?

Do you need to be strength training?

You know you should be doing something but you're just not sure what.

Insanity, kettlebells, Zumba, yoga, Pilates.

It's the question I get asked the most.

Friends, family, strangers on the train. They all want to know what exercise they should be doing for maximum weight loss.

Now, I could talk about the benefits of cardio, how strength training can help you lose weight, or how high intensity interval training is the most efficient way to train. And I will.

But none of these can be definitively classed as the best exercise for weight loss.

Why?

Because you have to do them to lose weight.

The best weight loss exercise is the one you do consistently

That may sound obvious and even a little silly. But nonetheless it is true.

Physiologically speaking certain types of exercise may be more efficient for weight loss than others. But if you don't do them it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

It's all very well knowing that weight training can increase your metabolism, and improve your body composition. But if you don't stick to a regular plan it won't do either.

Going for a long distance run isn't the best weight loss exercise. It's not effective or efficient. But if you do it regularly then it will help you burn calories and keep your weight down.

Of course you can miss a workout here and there. It's what you do consistently that counts.

If you're working out 3-4 times a week, it's not going to matter if you miss a week. In fact, it might help.

But if the situation is reversed and you're missing more workouts than you're doing, that athletic body you want so badly is going to stay a dream.

So whatever you do, do it consistently. That is the best weight loss exercise.

Best weight loss exercise is the one you enjoy

Doing something you enjoy is the best way to ensure you're going to stick to it.

So find something you enjoy.

Pushing yourself to your limit may not be your thing. So hold back on the high intensity workouts and try something a bit more endurance based.

You may prefer to be surrounded by like-minded people that give you a push when is starts to get tough. In which case, why not try some classes.

Whatever it is, make sure you enjoy it.

It may take you a while, but don't fret, and don't give up. Just keep trying. It's all exercise right?

It took me years and several really hideous workouts to find something I enjoyed.

Strength training and strongwoman. I even do it competitively.

I have to say I love the look of shock on people's faces when I pick up something really, bloody heavy.

Should you ever do something you don't enjoy?

That really depends on what it is and why you're doing it.

Always go back to, you have to do it to lose weight. So if you don't enjoy it are you going to do it?

If you want to work on a weakness then good for you. If you want to challenge yourself with an event. Absolutely, why not?

You'll probably start enjoying the progress you're making.

What I would say, make sure the goals are your own and you're not trying to prove yourself to anyone else.

But don't feel bad if there is something you don't like and you just don't want to do it.

If it's not impeding your goals and it's not impacting your health then don't do it. That would just be like self punishment. And who needs more of that!

I'm really not a fan of running. The long distance kind, I don't actually mind sprinting.

I know long distance running, and by long distance I mean anything over 400m, is a weakness of mine.

Do I hate it because I'm not good at it, or, am I not good at it because I hate doing it?

I'm not sure.

Either way, I've got no inclination to enter any running events, and I can work on my cardio in other ways. So staying away from running isn't impacting my general fitness or my goals.

As I don't enjoy it, why would I put myself through that!

What's your best weight loss exercise?

So go out and find something you enjoy doing. Everything you try counts as exercise. So keep trying.
