You Want to Lose Weight?

› Want to Lose Weight

Are You Sure?

So you want to lose weight...Are you sure?

That's a stupid question right? Of course you want to lose weight. Why else would you be here?

But hear me out for a minute...

Have you ever bought a new gadget?

A new phone?

A new computer?

You're so excited. You can't wait for it to arrive.

A new toy.

When it does. You take it out of the box. It's all shiny and new. You plug it in, wait for it to charge. And when it does ... well ... it does pretty much the same things as your old phone.

It may be a bit quicker. The camera might be a bit fancier. The screen might be a bit clearer. But it calls people. Sends texts messages. Receives your e-mails. Nothing that ground breaking. It's not going to revolutionise your life.

It's the same with weight loss.

Yes, you're going to be excited about your firm body. Having a wardrobe of lovely new clothes. Maybe you're even excited about being able to look in the mirror and not hate what you see. About prancing around the house starkers.

But, when you get there your body will still do the same things.

Maybe it will move a bit quicker, a bit easier. Maybe it will look a bit more fancy in those lovely new clothes.

But your heart will still pump blood around your body. Your legs will still carry you down the street. Your mind will still wander at times. And you'll still berate yourself for not being good enough.

Weight loss in itself is not going to revolutionise your life.

Ok, if you're morbidly obese then losing weight probably will revolutionise your life. But, for the majority of us ... it's not going to.

So what do you do? Give up? Not bother?

Absolutely not.

But maybe you should try accepting yourself. Loving yourself just how you are.

Want to Lose Weight: Why Self Acceptance is So Important

You wouldn't believe how many people I come across who have reached their target weight, the appearance they thought they wanted. But they're still not happy.

Crazy huh?

Not really.

The thing is, being overweight wasn't actually their problem. It was something else. They didn't really want to lose weight. And now they're not overweight they just find something else to beat themselves up over.

Whether it's not having the perfect job.

Whether it's not having enough money.

Or maybe it's not having the perfect relationship. The 2.4 kids.

By not accepting themselves, just how they are, they can't be happy.

If you can't bear to look at yourself in the mirror, or to let your husband or partner see you naked, I'd say there's more going on than just having a few extra pounds.

"A gold medal is a wonderful thing. But if you're not enough without it. You'll never be enough with it"

-One of my favourite quotes from one of my favourite films, Cool Runnings. And it can be applied to weight loss. If you're not enough without weight loss, you'll never be enough with it.

Because let's face it, what does losing weight actually mean? It means you exert less pressure on the earth. You take up less space. Is that in itself sufficient to make you happy?

I'll take a stab at no.

If you want to be happy, you have to accept yourself for who you are, weight and all.

I'm not saying you shouldn't push yourself. You shouldn't strive to be the best version of yourself. But do it because you think you deserve the best. You deserve to be happy.

I promise, things will become a lot easier.

Just imagine, loving our body and wanting the best for it.

You want to exercise because it's what your body wants and needs. You want to eat healthily because it's what your body thrives on. Just imagine how much easier weight loss would be. Not only the initial loss, but keeping it off as well.

You'll be surprised what you can achieve when you truly believe you deserve to be happy.

And you do you know.
